Wrought Iron & Metal Painting in Montreal

If you live in a duplex, triplex, or row house in Montreal, you know those iconic exterior spiral staircases that zigzag up building facades — one of the city’s most recognizable architectural signatures. These metal structures are functional, beautiful, and incredibly durable… but they have one formidable enemy: rust.

Road salt, snowmelt, the humidity of Quebec springs, and extreme temperature swings create ideal conditions for metal corrosion. Without regular maintenance, a steel staircase can deteriorate quickly — becoming dangerous and costly to repair or replace.

At Peintres Prestige, we specialize in treating and painting exterior metal structures: spiral staircases, steel balconies, handrails, guardrails, and all exterior metal elements

Wrought Iron & Metal Painting

Understanding Rust to Fight It Better

Rust (iron oxidation) is an electrochemical process that occurs when metal is exposed to moisture and oxygen. Once it starts, it progresses from the outside in if left untreated — first superficial, then deep, until it compromises the structural integrity of the piece.

The good news: surface rust is entirely treatable and does not require replacement. It’s when rust is left to progress too long that the damage becomes irreparable. This is why regular maintenance — ideally every 5 to 7 years depending on exposure — is so important

Our Iron & Metal Painting Process

Step 1 — Metal Condition Assessment

We inspect the entire structure to assess the extent of rust and identify areas of structural weakness. If any components are too corroded to salvage, we inform you before work begins.

Step 2 — Mechanical Rust Removal

We use wire brushes, angle grinders, and abrasive discs to mechanically remove all active rust, flaking paint, and surface oxides. This step is non-negotiable: painting over active rust without treating it first guarantees short-term failure.

Step 3 — Rust Converter Application

For areas of light to moderate rust that are difficult to reach mechanically — corners, welds, pitted zones — we apply a chemical rust converter. This product reacts with iron oxides to neutralize them and transform them into a stable compound that can then be painted over.

Step 4 — Zinc-Rich Primer Application

This is the key step that separates professional work from a simple cosmetic touch-up. We apply a zinc-rich primer — the gold standard for corrosion protection on ferrous metals. Zinc works through cathodic protection: it sacrifices itself in place of the iron, dramatically slowing the corrosion process even if the topcoat is slightly damaged.

Step 5 — Finish Coat Application

We apply one or two coats of alkyd or urethane enamel paint depending on your preferences. These products deliver a hard, impact-resistant finish that stands up to the elements — ideal for high-traffic surfaces like stairs. The standard color is typically matte or gloss black, but we work in any color from the full palette.

Structures We Treat

  • Exterior spiral staircases (typical of Montreal duplexes and triplexes)
  • Steel and cast iron balconies and galleries
  • Balcony guardrails and handrails
  • Wrought iron fences and gates
  • Galvanized steel fire escape staircases

The Importance of Preventive Maintenance

In Montreal, the winter cycle is particularly harsh on exterior metals. Road salt and de-icing products used on stairs and balconies significantly accelerate corrosion. We recommend an annual visual inspection and preventive treatment every 5 to 7 years — before rust has a chance to take hold.

A regularly maintained staircase can last 30, 40 years or more. A neglected one may require partial or full replacement in under 15 years. The economic case is clear.

Iron & Metal Painting: Safety & Compliance

Beyond aesthetics, maintaining exterior stairs and balconies is a matter of safety. A corroded structure can give way under weight — with serious consequences. At Peintres Prestige, we systematically flag any structural element that requires the attention of a metalworker or structural engineer.
